If you’ve got some free time coming up, and you’re not sure what to do with it, then perhaps it’s time you thought about doing something to help improve your community, and maybe even the lives of the people that live in it. So if this sounds like something you’d like to do, but you have no idea where to start, here are a few suggestions on how to start lending a hand to those who need it most.

What Are Your Skills?

Are you good with people, or better with computers? Whatever you’re good at, you can use these skills to help individual people or organisations. If you have retail experience, you could always volunteer to work in a local charity shop for a few hours a week, charity shops are often on the lookout for volunteers, and sometimes pledging just a few hours a week can make all the difference.

What are Your Interests?

This may vary on your background and experience, and finding a volunteer project that you’re interested in is beneficial for everyone involved, as you will be getting to do something that you enjoy. Consider what you like to do, it could be gardening, going to the cinema, or maybe even just going for a walk, and see what agencies could be compatible with you. If you’ve had the experience of working with people with a severe disability in the past, then this could be something that you could revisit.

What Else Can You Do?

If you can’t spare the time to volunteer during the week, then hosting fundraising events during the weekends could be the best way for you to use your spare time. Do a sponsored run, fundraise on the street, or even just make a donation to a charity, there is so much you can do to help out these organisations. The summer holidays are an ideal time to get in touch with charities, as they may well need more volunteers and donations at that time of year.
