Majorca (or Mallorca, as it is frequently called), off the east coast of Spain, is the largest of the Balearic Islands. It is also the most popular in terms of tourism, beating Minorca, and also its meaner and louder sibling Ibiza - famous for its legendary music scene. Since package holidays boomed in the 50's - Majorca has remained near the top of the holiday-makers agenda. And with so much going for it, it's easy to see why.
First and foremost, being just east of Spain, Majorca experiences excellent weather in the summer months. Hot, but not roasting, temperatures, low rainfall, and beautiful sunsets looking over the sea at the horizon are all necessary ingredients for a country to forge a reputation as a great holiday destination. And Majorca has it all. Beaches line much of the coast, and if you prefer quieter beaches as opposed to the more touristy ones, Majorca has plenty of beaches within driving distance, offering that extra bit of tranquillity.
Majorca has a short flying time too, of just over 2 hours from London, making holidaying there convenient. The majority of visitors stay in or near Palma, on the south west coast of the island. With a vibrant atmosphere, and plenty to see and do, Palma is a great place to stay. Magaluf, more popular with youngsters due to its bar and club scene, is located a fairly short drive away from Palma, further west.
The locals in
Majorca are friendly and due to the huge tourism industry most speak at least some English making ordering in restaurants or shops easy. The island has many people coming back for more due to the weather, food, beaches, scenery and atmosphere - holidays in Majorca show no sign of letting up.
